Guy Ritchie's insipid vehicle for his then-wife Madonna went straight to video in the UK and it's obvious why. A contemporary reworking of Lina Wertmuller's 1974 picture, this romantic comedy is a lifeless and occasionally misogynistic bore. Aside from the quirky Desperately Seeking Susan, singer Madonna has never made a cinematic splash, and her role here as a spoilt socialite stranded on an island with one of her hired boat's crew only cements her less than distinguished acting reputation. Her co-stars aren't much better, though, with even the usually reliable Jeanne Tripplehorn delivering a grotesque and unfunny caricature. As for Ritchie's direction and script, they're so unimaginative it's like watching a bad 1970s TV drama. Only Adriano Giannini as the boat slave-turned-desert-island master has any spark, but, by the end of a turgid one-and-a-half hours or so, even his earthy charm loses its appeal.
