Masters of horror George A Romero and Dario Argento joined forces to create this double bill based on a pair of Edgar Allan Poe stories. Romero's contribution is The Facts in the Case of M Valdemar, in which a man is mesmerised at the moment of death but with awful consequences. Poe's slim story is stretched to no avail, and the new material is handled in a conventional TV style. Argento's version of The Black Cat is more successful. The adaptation, a radical update involving Harvey Keitel as a photographer who goes mad and murders his girlfriend, is again overlong but builds to a mad and bloody climax. Note the (pointless) homage to Psycho, with Martin Balsam walking up an identical staircase to the one in the Bates house. Both stories were previously adapted in Corman's Tales of Terror.
