Overview:
A minimal plot is buffed up with minimalist style in the American debut of British director Asif Kapadia (The Warrior, Senna). Travelling sales rep Sarah Michelle Gellar is haunted by nightmarish visions of a woman's unsolved murder years before, and finds herself drawn to a small town that might hold the answers. The film's disorientating supernatural element doesn't kick in until far too late, and so comes across as an afterthought. By that time the initial intrigue has become dissipated by tiresome attempts at psychological depth, with Gellar lacking the ability to make that aspect of her character credible. The bleached-out cinematography exploits the desolate Texas locations well and Sam Shepard does fine work as Gellar's estranged father. But most viewers will find themselves two steps ahead in piecing the mysterious clues together and there aren't enough sudden shocks for this to work as a horror piece.
