With Dirk Bogarde strutting around a small Mexican town in the tightest black leather trousers the censors would allow and John Mills spouting Catholic dogma in an abominable Irish accent, this has all the makings of a cult classic. Sadly, the story, penned by Nigel Balchin from a long-forgotten novel by Audrey Erskine Lindop, is so dull that your mind is soon numbed to the actorly excesses of the stars. Director Roy Ward Baker doesn't help matters with his leaden pacing and over-deliberate staging. French actress Mylène Demongeot looks lost and far from home at the centre of this scene-stealing tug-of-war.
