Tyrone Power plays a First World War veteran who, after a tragic love affair in Paris, goes to India for spiritual renewal. Based on Somerset Maugham's novel (the author himself is played by Herbert Marshall), this big-budget melodrama bursts with incident and was pitched by 20th Century-Fox as Power's return to the screen after distinguished war service. To mark the auspicious occasion, Fox cast two of its most glamorous stars Gene Tierney and Anne Baxter to tug on Power's sleeve and heartstrings. A big hit in its day, though rather laughable today for its cornball psychology, and disastrously remade in 1984 with Bill Murray.
