The team behind Zulu - Cy Endfield, Stanley Baker - is reunited in South Africa here for another gritty adventure. It's a well-cast survival picture, in which a charter plane is grounded by a plague of locusts, leaving a group of passengers to bicker, rape, kill and generally abuse each other in the desert. That is, until a tribe of baboons makes a monkey out of everyone. In case no one notices, it's an allegory showing how, given half a chance, humans will regress to ape-like behaviour, with Stuart Whitman taking on the role of the prime primate. It's not in the class of Endfield's previous epic, but it has a raw intensity all of its own thanks to some excellent performances and imposing locations.
