Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock star in this uneven adaptation of Alice Hoffman's novel, playing sisters who are descended from witches. Kidman is the wilder sibling, while Bullock is the home-loving store owner who falls for Aidan Quinn, the detective who investigates when Kidman's abusive boyfriend disappears. There are nice supporting performances from Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as the sisters' equally witchy aunts, but director Griffin Dunne - who made the blackly comic Addicted to Love - ultimately fails to make either a moving comedy romance or a funny romantic comedy. Unfortunately, this is The Witches of Eastwick with its humour and sizzle removed.

Sally and Gillian Owens, born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian's vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov -- and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.
