Overview:
A game of hide-and-seek is taken to deadly extremes in writer/director Richard Jobson's visceral fourth feature. In a tense cat-and-mouse thriller that fuses biting socio-economic commentary with breakneck action, callous investment banker Alistair (Dougray Scott) and his new apprentice (Alastair Mackenzie) make violent sport of Edinburgh's unfortunates. Their latest victim is jobless teen Sean (James Anthony Pearson), who's offered cash to help his debt-ridden sister in return for being the quarry in a 12-hour manhunt through the night-time streets. What follows is rooted in bleak reality, though the pounding soundtrack and breathless pacing tend to make the simple events play out like a video game. Yet in focusing on thrills over emotion, Jobson occasionally neglects his dialogue and disregards the characters' frequently implausible behaviour. Fortunately the performances are strong, with Pearson's poignant desperation in neat contrast to Scott's American Psycho-style villainy.
