Not the slick Martin Scorsese-directed remake, but the gripping and tension-laden original thriller about an embittered ex-con (Robert Mitchum) terrorising the frightened family of the meek lawyer (Gregory Peck) who put him in prison. Great shocks increase the climactic suspense, with Mitchum giving a portrayal of villainy that's unforgettably vicious and sadistic. Director J Lee Thompson's skilful use of light and shadow enhances the uncomfortable mood, while Bernard Herrmann's score counterpoints the growing dread with deft precision.

Sam Bowden witnesses a rape committed by Max Cady and testifies against him. When released after 8 years in prison, Cady begins stalking Bowden and his family but is always clever enough not to violate the law.
