After Elf, Anchorman and Talladega Nights, the ungainly, 6ft 3in Saturday Night Live alumnus Will Ferrell further proves his versatility in this enjoyable if trite sports movie spoof. Ferrell plays sex-addicted, skating bad boy Chazz Michael Michaels, who, along with his effeminate nemesis Jimmy MacElroy (Napoleon Dynamite's goofy Jon Heder) is banned from the sport after their rivalry degenerates into an unseemly brawl. But to get back on the ice, the pair are eventually forced to team up and enter the world championships as the sport's first ever male/male pair. It's a technical triumph from commercials-schooled directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon, as real-life skating action is mixed with some spectacular effects-based moves, but Ferrell and Heder provide funky physical comedy in close-up, too. Much of the humour comes from the overtly homoerotic nature of their routines, and their gradually thawing relationship. There's also fine support from Amy Poehler and Arrested Development's Will Arnett as their camp and pretentious opponents.
