The set-up (girl meets boy when she moves into his New York apartment block) must have been used dozens of times, but what makes this different is that the boy, Adam (Hugh Dancy), while seemingly a little geeky, actually has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. He's a skilled electrical engineer, but less skilled at social interaction: Adam is way too honest and takes everything at face value, though he does manage to make a joke about Forrest Gump when new neighbour Beth (Rose Byrne) gives him chocolates. Beth is a somewhat spoilt only child, but her heart is in the right place and she gently draws him out of his shell. The situations are sometimes a little too cute, the dialogue a little too neat. But just when you think that it is all going to get too gooey, director/writer Max Mayer pulls it together, and, with the help of the two likeable leads, charms his way out of the morass, while addressing the awkward question of whether they are really in love or just dependent on each other.
