Overview:
Originally titled Old New Borrowed Blue, this low-key, Belfast-based drama from director Michael Winterbottom has Dervla Kirwan and Christopher Eccleston as a young couple desperate to start a family. When an old French pen pal of hers (Yvan Attal) turns up out of the blue, the tension that has been building between them threatens to capsize their marriage. Though the film went straight to video in the UK, Winterbottom's perceptive study of the power plays between husband and wife is definitely worth a watch. Writer John Forte does not shy away from Ulster's age-old sectarian divisions, but neither does he let them interfere with the refreshing seam of optimism that runs through this gentle gem.
