When it comes to TV movies based on true stories, Hollywood relishes the chance to exploit the uncertain, unsettling, dangerous and horrid goings-on in the trim gardens of small-town America. Here, a rather imaginative kidnapping involving 26 children, their bus driver and three rich-kid criminals causes ructions in Chowchilla, California. The suspense is ably sustained by director Vern Gillum, and Karl Malden, as the driver, enlivens the proceedings with his trademark mix of doggedness and decency.

Three young men decide to make easy money by mass kidnapping. After careful preparations, they hijack the school bus and take 26 children and the driver as hostages. However, the bravery and the wit of the old driver could spoil their plan for the perfect crime.
