This glossy but disappointing Hollywood remake of Alejandro Amenábar's off-kilter Spanish thriller Open Your Eyes makes the fatal error of jettisoning the original's potent psychological suspense. Though it is a near scene-for-scene replication, writer/director Cameron Crowe has turned a disquieting and disorientating murder mystery into a superficial showcase for star Tom Cruise (whose character's facial disfigurement has been laughably toned down). Some pleasure is to be gleaned from the ever amusing Jason Lee as Cruise's best friend and Cameron Diaz's lively turn as Tom's unstable lover, but neither the star nor his then-girlfriend Penélope Cruz (reprising her role from the original) looks at all comfortable, nor share any palpable chemistry. Though convoluted, Amenábar's riveting original pulled off its dream-like twists with shattering conviction; Crowe doesn't seem like he means a word of it.

David Aames has it all: wealth, good looks and gorgeous women on his arm. But just as he begins falling for the warmhearted Sofia, his face is horribly disfigured in a car accident. That's just the beginning of his troubles as the lines between illusion and reality, between life and death, are blurred.
