Overview:
Director Nelson McCormick and writer JS Cardone (the men behind the Prom Night remake) here craft a slightly less disposable, if still redundant, retread of another noteworthy chiller. Like the 1986 original, in which a paternal serial killer obsessively tries creating the perfect family unit, the film revolves around a creepily charismatic central performance. Terry O'Quinn (TV's Lost) is replaced by Nip/Tuck's Dylan Walsh, whose mercurial personality changes and icy delivery as David Harris keep the basic scares fairly watchable. As David tricks his way into the family of suspicious eldest son Michael (Penn Badgley), only the addition of modern technology (texts, Google etc) and an unnecessary focus on Michael's relationship with his hot girlfriend (a mostly half-clothed Amber Heard) make this anything more than a virtual facsimile of the first film. But without the dark Reagan-era satire or frighteningly inverted family values that made the original so memorable, McCormick's lacklustre reboot is just another indistinguishable psycho thriller.
