A young man is encouraged by his parents to leave his village to pursue a university education and improve his prospects. After a failed romance, he returns home in defeat, but gains new purpose in helping the local miners, who are having to work under life-threatening conditions. Davey Fenwick leaves his mining village on a university scholarship intent on returning to better support the miners against the owners. But he falls in love with Jenny who gets him to marry her and return home as local schoolteacher before finishing his degree.
