This fourth adaptation of Ethel Lina White's creepy novel, Some Must Watch, is so bad that it almost makes you pine for the lame 1975 remake of Robert Siodmak's 1946 black-and-white classic, in which a young mute maid is menaced by a strangler. Director James Head commits several cardinal sins. First, he updates the action from the early years of the last century to the present day and relocates it to a remote island setting. Then he tinkers with the plot, so that the killer's motive is loot not lunacy. Finally, he introduces a secret passage and removes the local doctor who previously provided the heroine with a much-needed ally. Embarrassing, if not inept.
