"She lived many lives - except her own."

Overview:
This eccentric yarn stars Robin Wright Penn as Pippa, an increasingly desperate housewife forced to live in a retirement village by her much older husband (Alan Arkin). Her new life, surrounded by old people, provides stark contrast to her wild days as a teenager - played in flashbacks by bright young thing Blake Lively. Writer/director Rebecca Miller (who based the film on her own novel) has a similarly contradictory approach, mixing grim tragedy and goofball comedy. It makes for a sometimes discomfiting watch, but the dry humour and savvy performances just about manage to counter all the weirdness. The wisecracking Arkin is much livelier than the average OAP and Winona Ryder is also very funny as Pippa's unhinged friend. Wright Penn conveys Pippa's nervous breakdown with a much quieter grace, which is vital to anchoring the story. And she keeps her performance credible even when she's being led astray by a mysterious neighbour (Keanu Reeves) with a tattoo of Jesus on his chest.
