Overview:
If it's a Tudor spin on Dynasty you want - all catfights and shoulder pads - then Justin Chadwick's adaptation of Philippa Gregory's bestselling novel won't disappoint. Previously filmed for TV in 2003, this version certainly boasts an impressive cast, with Natalie Portman (Anne) and Scarlett Johansson (Mary) playing the Boleyn sisters. Their ambitious father (Mark Rylance) and uncle (David Morrissey) see an opportunity, as King Henry VIII (Eric Bana) becomes frustrated by Katherine of Aragon's failure to produce a surviving male heir. When the monarch visits the Boleyn home, it's the demure Mary who first takes his fancy - much to the chagrin of her sister, who plots to become Queen. Although Mary is presented as the heroine here, she comes across as a simpering idiot; Henry is just as dim and there is little attempt to humanise the scheming Anne. Only Katherine (more often known as Catherine), played by Spanish actress Ana Torrent, inspires sympathy in this tawdry tale. With its crass dialogue and dubious, join-the-dots plotting, this is a love story with all the subtlety of an axe.
