Hardcore kickboxing star Jean-Claude Van Damme leads a hard corps of bodyguards in this lightweight action thriller. He's a traumatised Iraq vet who's hired as chief protection officer for boxing champ Wayne Barclay (Razaaq Adoti) when a war erupts between Barclay and an ex-con rap producer (Viv Leacock). Reuniting Van Damme with director Sheldon Lettich (Double Impact, AWOL), this tries hard to extend Van Damme's appeal to young urban audiences with a hip hop soundtrack and a gangsta villain who likes punishing bungling henchmen by feeding them to his attack dogs. Van Damme delivers the obligatory fight scenes with lots of well-honed snarls and the odd high-kick. Pity he can't dodge the screenplay's killer bullets: a dire romantic subplot and the clunky Iraq flashbacks (apparently shot in Romania) that saddle his character with bags of overwrought shell-shocked trauma.
