Despite the stirring presence of Robert Mitchum and a useful support cast, director Burt Kennedy completely fails to carry off this Ride the High Country clone for several reasons. Co-star George Kennedy (no relation) is a talented character actor - he won a best supporting actor Oscar for Cool Hand Luke - but he lacks the starpower to be a convincing adversary for Mitchum, unconsciously sabotaging the plot by not possessing the mythic stature required for the role. There is an uncomfortable sense of period, as cars and horses jostle in a ludicrous finale, and the comedic tone is very uncertain. No wonder it was reduced to co-feature status with The Valley of Gwangi on its British release.

An aging lawman and an aging outlaw join forces when their respective positions in society are usurped by a younger, but incompetent Marshal, and a younger, but vicious gang leader.
