Small-town America comes in for another indie lashing in this patchy, pathos-packed comedy. Jennifer Aniston will surprise many as the shopgirl whose infatuation with wannabe writer Jake Gyllenhaal sends ripples through her insular Texan community. But it's the peripheral characters who bring some much needed colour to the occasionally predictable proceedings, most notably born-again security guard Mike White and mischievous makeover clerk Zooey Deschanel, although John C Reilly and Tim Blake Nelson are typically sound as Aniston's forgiving husband and his scheming pal. It's engaging and enjoyable, but lacks the edge of Miguel Arteta's previous offerings, Star Maps and Chuck & Buck.
