Overview:
Award-winning playwright David Auburn made his film-directing debut with this intriguing tale of a mother traumatised by the disappearance of her daughter in Central Park, New York. Sixteen years later, she leads a regimented life in the city, divorced from her husband and barely making contact with her son (Alessandro Nivola). Then a chance run-in with Louise (Kate Bosworth), a strangely familiar young woman, stirs Julia's repressed maternal instincts. Auburn, who also wrote the script, leads us into a guessing game, as Julia begins to suspect that Louise may be her daughter. But he also raises the possibility that she may not be able to handle the truth, whatever that turns out to be. Sigourney Weaver is a bold choice for Julia, bringing her innate aloofness to the role of a woman who suddenly finds an outlet for the emotions she shut down all those years ago. She's occasionally bogged down by melodrama, but her tough shell is just what's needed to keep the film together.
