Overview:
Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst makes his directorial debut with this indie drama set at an Ivy League college in the 1980s. Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) plays nerdy freshman Charlie Banks, whose world is turned upside down when Mick (Jason Ritter), a thug he knew at high school, drops in to visit. Years ago, Charlie grassed Mick to the cops after he hospitalised a couple of seniors in a vicious brawl, but now the blue-collar bully is making nice and pursuing the rich girl (Eva Amurri) that Charlie loves. Avoiding the obvious revenge plot, Durst takes this preppy tale of class and longing along a more engaging route as charming sociopath Mick begins to envy Charlie's campus lifestyle. Although it over-eggs its theme - references to The Great Gatsby abound - the film is at least blessed with an affecting cast, especially Eisenberg who's fast establishing himself as US cinema's slack-jawed, broccoli-haired über-geek of choice.
