Overview:
Ian McEwan's dark, psychologically complex novels have not always worked well as cinema, but this is an exception, largely owing to some outstanding acting and a script from director Andrew Birkin that sticks close to its source material. This disturbing story, adapted from McEwan's first novel, is about children and their reactions to death and loss, and it refuses to conform to any cosy notion of grief. As such, with its central theme about sexual desire and incest, it occasionally makes uncomfortable and intellectually challenging viewing. The performances of Charlotte Gainsbourg, Andrew Robertson, Alice Coulthard and Ned Birkin are incredibly mature and multilayered, and made all the more remarkable by their relative inexperience as actors.
