"Based on an inspiring true story of survival"
- Director: Gary Yates
- Genre: TV Movie, Mystery, Thriller
- Studio: AMediaVision Productions
- Duration: 120 Mins
|
Overview:
The 2001 kidnap of American teen Anne Sluti is re-enacted in this lacklustre crime thriller. But despite being based on a true story, there's nothing about the film that feels real. Instead of fully formed performances, leads James Van Der Beek and Sara Canning deliver unconvincing movie clichés - he's all shouty and frowning as the fugitive abductor, Tony Zappa; she's wide-eyed and listless as his victim. With such lazy characterisation, the events of the six-day ordeal have little tension or emotional impact, particularly when reductive scripting skates over the pair's increasingly complex relationship that crucially allowed quick-thinking Sluti to manipulate Zappa. The plodding police procedural element of the film compounds this flat atmosphere, leaving it to the foreboding soundtrack to generate interest and unease.
