Overview:
After bending time and space on a grand scale with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, writer/director Garth Jennings revisits his own childhood in this wonderful 1980s-set growing pains yarn. Newcomer Bill Milner is adorable as Will Proudfoot, the timid boy who defies years of religious indoctrination by his devout Plymouth Brethren mother (Jessica Hynes) when he falls in with school bully and aspiring film-maker Lee (Will Poulter). Unfamiliar with TV, Will is transfixed by his new friend's pirated video of Sylvester Stallone in First Blood, and is soon enlisted as a stuntman in Lee's new action film. Together they re-create war-torn Vietnam in leafy English suburbia - only this time there's less gore and more belly laughs. It's a nostalgia trip with a slightly surreal twist, and it's occasionally indulgent, but the bond between the boys is strong enough to prevail. Ultimately, this is a poignant ode to friendship, in which blood is only spilled as an expression of loyalty.
