Overview:
From Sofia Coppola, the writer/director of Lost in Translation, comes another story of an older man and a younger woman, set against the backdrop of a luxury hotel. But this time the players are a remote, depressed father and his estranged 11-year-old daughter. The star is Stephen Dorff, cast against his usual villainous type, who plays fading Hollywood actor Johnny Marco. A pill-popping, hard-partying, 30-something womaniser, Marco isn't so much a deadbeat dad as a half-hearted one, but when his ex leaves their little girl Cleo (Elle Fanning) with him for a few more days than usual, he starts waking up to his duties. Not much happens, and the measured, deliberate pace can be read as either stately or deathly. But as a slow-burn, poetic character piece it works just fine, with Dorff and especially Fanning making engaging leads. Whether the emotional crises of a spoilt movie brat deserve 97 minutes of your time is another matter, but Somewhere's dry bursts of surreal comedy make them just about palatable.
