This intelligent thriller remains one of Ridley Scott's most quietly satisfying works. Tom Berenger plays a tough police detective who gets to sample the high life when he is assigned to protect beautiful, wealthy Mimi Rogers, the key witness in a murder trial. It may lack the power of the director's Gladiator, Thelma & Louise and Blade Runner, but this is still beautifully shot and remains a stylish affair. Howard Franklin's clever script touches upon issues of class and voyeurism, while still producing the goods in the suspense stakes, and the performances are first rate: Berenger is grumpily charismatic, while Rogers shines as the woman in distress.
