Kevin Spacey stars as psychiatrist Henry Carter in this Crash-style, multi-stranded modern-day redemption story. A widower with a chronic drug problem, Carter is plugged into the Hollywood A-list, treating two fading celebrities (Saffron Burrows and an uncredited Robin Williams) and a neurotic high-powered agent in his exclusive clinic. At his father's request, Carter begins to treat a poor black girl, Jemma (Keke Palmer), whose mother has committed suicide, a situation that mirrors his own experience and stirs his jaded conscience. But though it dwells on the seamier side of showbiz - a seedy, pill-popping actor and a slutty casting-couch actress turn up in subplots - it ultimately buys into the fantasy land it had started out debunking. Spacey gives it his best shot, but the movie is whiney, self-righteous tosh with characters whose paths barely cross, about a place where leopards can and do change their spots and where, literally, any sins can be forgiven if you write a really good screenplay.
