A psychologist who's built her career debunking the notion of multiple-personality disorders finds herself stumped by a unique patient in this horror puzzler. Julianne Moore furrows her brow and looks deeply concerned as the doctor, while Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays it wide-eyed as the man who mysteriously switches into the personae of a string of murder victims. But their efforts are squandered on this flimsy farrago that wastes their time and ours. Toying with the notion of wavering religious faith, the script (by Michael Cooney, son of veteran British theatrical farceur Ray Cooney) conjures up laughable backwoods witchery and mild moments of supernatural dread, but abandons all logic when it tries to pull these disparate strands together. Swedish directing duo Marlind and Stein - evidently too cool for Christian names - certainly know how to replicate the murky look of early 1970s low-budget horror flicks, but when it comes to telling a coherent story they seem to have abdicated responsibility. Scary-movie fans deserve a whole lot better than this nonevent.
