Overview:
Brutally violent, over-stylised to distraction and overdone to a laughable degree, director Wayne Kramer's follow-up to The Cooler is an unrelenting and intensely off-putting journey through urban moral depravity. Low-level gangster Paul Walker has been ordered by his bosses to dispose of a gun that was used to kill a dirty cop. But when his son's best friend (Cameron Bright) steals it to shoot his abusive stepfather and then goes on the run, Walker has just one night to retrieve the incriminating weapon. All the sleazy characters encountered during Bright's walk on the dark side are fairy-tale exaggerations, while the setting itself - Grimley - is a nod to the Brothers Grimm. But it's a clunky metaphor that refuses to work. With twists you can see coming miles off and the bruised colour palette supposedly reflecting "battered psyches", Kramer's hyper action thriller pushes logic and bleakness through the bad taste barrier into farce.
