Withdrawn, mute 10-year-old Philip is ignored by his parents and goes off to explore Dartmoor alone, where he meets a retired colonel who shares his knowledge of Devon's wildlife. Under the older man's nurturing tutelage, the boy begins to tame a wild white colt, but fate proffers a series of setbacks just as real progress is being made.
