Overview:
Actor John Turturro's third stint as director is a decidedly offbeat affair. Part salty romantic comedy, part Broadway-style musical, the self-penned feature uses a flimsy tale of marital infidelity as a unifying device for elaborate song-and-dance sequences. In the movie's best performance, Kate Winslet plays gutter-mouthed temptress Tula, whose steamy liaisons with James Gandolfini's New York steelworker set his wife Susan Sarandon on the warpath. Reality and fantasy blur as the outlandish characters combine predominantly sex-themed banter with hit-and-miss musical outbursts, in which they lip-synch or sing along to contemporary anthems. The highlight is an Elvis-obsessed Christopher Walken crooning to Tom Jones's Delilah, but even that isn't the show stopper it should be. By concentrating on eccentricity instead of plot, the unfocused picture often feels contrived and self-indulgent. There's no emotional balance either, with a subdued and conventional finale sitting clumsily with the flamboyant presentation of earlier scenes.
