A studious teenager in a 1950s working-class neighbourhood dreams of going to university and becoming a writer. She ends up pregnant after a one-night stand with a kindly but dim older boy, and finds her efforts to pursue an education severely curtailed - especially when her new husband becomes addicted to heroin.
