Overview:
Director John Erick Dowdle's instant remake of the 2007 Spanish horror hit [Rec] relocates the action to Los Angeles, where a young TV reporter (Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman are on assignment at a fire station. They're called to an emergency at an apartment block, and before long they find themselves recording a bloody nightmare in the now-quarantined building, where a rabies-like infection has taken hold. Dowdle's film is a virtual carbon copy of Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza's original, with its shaky handheld camerawork and an absence of music, though there's more emphasis here on the rabies theme and more establishing scenes at the fire station. Unfortunately, this version emphasises realism over the supernatural, and the suspense is diminished as a result. What raw energy and shock value there is will have more impact for those who haven't already seen [Rec] - for those who have, this is a near-pointless exercise.
