Jamie Lee Curtis cemented her Scream Queen title with this inventively plotted, (relatively) light on gore, entry in the teenagers-in-jeopardy/stalk-and-slash cycle inaugurated by Halloween and appropriating the Carrie high-school setting. Four youngsters cause the death of a fifth in the modishly formula opening prologue, and several years later an axe-wielding killer turns up at the school prom seeking belated revenge. An elongated and suspenseful chase sequence through the campus and the surprise identity of the masked maniac lifts it above average.
