Backpackers in the outback are turned into cannibal zombie killers in this silly Oz horror about an ancient evil lurking among lost Aborigine cave paintings. Slickly put together, it's a pretty pointless exercise in latex appliances that rolls through all the standard clichés as its bickering, barely likeable characters are turned, one by one, into monsters. First to suffer is sex-crazed teen Mel (Krew Boylan), who's transformed into a snarling, sabre-toothed she-beast and forced to leap through the bush like the Bionic Woman. She gets off lightly: later victims are raped by tentacles and impregnated with blob creature babies. Not a patch on the best Oz horror, like Razorback or Wolf Creek, Primal's black-humoured silliness only manages to raise the odd chuckle. Picnic at Hanging Rock was never like this..

Anja and five friends join anthroplogy student, Dace, on a journey to study a remote, ancient rock painting. Their excitement vanishes when Mel becomes delirious after skinny-dipping in the waterhole. Feverish, bleeding, confused, she physically and mentally regresses to a vicious predatory state. Mel has gone primal. Mel’s lover and friends realise they are the prey as she savagely hunts them down. Before they can escape another one of them starts to regress, posing a hideous choice; kill their friends or be killed by them. Their only hope of survival is through a cave, where Anja learns too late the meaning of the ancient rock art they came to study.
