With Ponyo, acclaimed Japanese writer/director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro) has crafted another delightful animated fantasy - this time the tale of a little fish who dreams of becoming a human girl. The simple story (inspired by The Little Mermaid) concerns a young boy called Sosuke who lives in a small coastal town. One morning he discovers a pretty goldfish he names Ponyo. But Ponyo is no ordinary fish, and her love for Sosuke sets in motion events that threaten to disrupt the very balance of nature. Miyazaki's trademark flights of fancy are here - with psychedelic seascapes and amazing underwater creatures - and the animation is beautifully vivid. But the visuals are matched by the eco-minded story, believable characters and unhurried unfolding of the magical events. The fact that the human characters accept the most extraordinary occurrences in a matter-of-fact fashion is especially charming. The English voice cast, which includes Cate Blanchett and Matt Damon, is outstanding, particularly Liam Neeson as Ponyo's father - a human who has turned his back on mankind in order to live under the sea. This is a million miles away from the garish and crude cartoons that American studios often churn out, and serves as a reminder that animated films can be imaginative, enchanting and exciting while still telling a sweet, good-hearted story.
