This animated re-creation of the legendary romance between native American maiden Pocahontas (voiced by Irene Bedard) and captain John Smith (Mel Gibson) in the 17th-century New World is visually stunning but historically flimsy. The first Disney animation to deal with a factual subject skilfully communicates both its "love conquers all" and ecological messages, although the greedy governor (David Ogden Stiers) is so over-the-top he's practically out of sight. A straight-to-video sequel followed in 1998, while supporting voice actor Christian Bale would later appear in Terrence Malick's superb 2005 live-action rendition of the same story.
