In director Alexandre Aja's average spin on Joe Dante's 1978 Jaws knock-off, an underwater earthquake releases prehistoric man-eating fish into Lake Victoria, Arizona, on the eve of the Spring Break holiday. Aside from the 3D gimmick, there's not much on offer here that the low-budget original didn't include, with plenty of comical gore, snappy thrills and in-joke references (Richard Dreyfuss is the pre-credits victim; horror director Eli Roth meets a sticky end). Aja handles the fish-frenzy mayhem well, especially in the latter beach-party stages, and Christopher Lloyd is a hoot as the mad scientist who prefaces the last shock twist. As a porn director shooting nude swimming (Kelly Brook's hilarious highlight), Jerry O'Connell goes way over-the-top - something the entire movie should have done, rather than rely on chewed body parts, vomit in 3D and floating silicone implants for easy gross-out laughs.

Agent of special department "Piranha" Kirill Mazur and his colleague Olga go to the far north with the assignment to liquidate an underwater secret weapon lab in the guise of a mutual vacation. All of a sudden, they find themselves in the world where civilization laws are forgotten, and this deadly weapons are kept by gangsters who are controlled by a new "master of taiga" Prohor, whose leisure time is spent hunting at humans. Mazur didn't know that he would have to trade his familiar gun for a hand-made bone knife, and save his companion and himself instead of saving the world. For them, this safari in northern forests would be no less dangerous as for the live targets.
