Director David Gordon Green cranks up the action for this stoner comedy from the production house of Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Superbad). Seth Rogen plays Dale Denton, a process server whose world mostly revolves around smoking marijuana. After his friendly dealer Saul Silver (James Franco) sells Dale some ultra-high quality "Pineapple Express" reefer, the dope ends up being traced back to them in a gangland murder. Soon the buddies are on the run, smashing their mobile phones and trying to avoid being shot by a corrupt cop (Rosie Perez). Between moments of drug-addled glee, the plot thickens to involve Dale's high-school girlfriend and a cast of other misfits. It's well paced, well thought-out and highly absurd (the final shoot-out doesn't know when to quit), but the characters are hard to warm to. The plot may not hold up to close scrutiny, but that doesn't stop it from being a fun ride.
