This messy eco-upheaval picture was the first feature directed by title sequence maestro Saul Bass, whose work is notable for its animation and stylised use of colour and caption. Yet here, when he has a fuller range of visual techniques to experiment with, he fails to conjure up any sense of suspense. The special effects don't improve matters much, nor do the lacklustre performances of Nigel Davenport and Michael Murphy as scientists who discover that a desert ant colony is preparing to take over the planet before humans destroy it.
