Overview:
As with Paris, Je T'Aime (it's from the same producer, Emmanuel Benbihy), the sheer diversity of this portmanteau movie is both a curse and a blessing. With 11 directors on board and a collection of wildly diverse stories - ranging from broad comedy to brooding psychological drama - there's something here for everyone to both love and dislike. All told, the hit rate is slightly lower this time, with some segments being little more than cinematic asides or self-indulgent shorts. On the plus side, the large non-US contingent (the directors include the likes of Fatih Akin, Shekhar Kapur, Mira Nair and Jiang Wen) ensures that the Big Apple is seen with both fresh eyes and from a truly multicultural perspective, while the playing of the starry ensemble (Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom, Shia LaBeouf, Ethan Hawke, Julie Christie, Bradley Cooper, John Hurt, among others) can't be faulted. Best segment? Well, for all the award-winning talent on show, it's Brett Ratner's comic tale of an unexpectedly memorable prom date between a teenage boy (Anton Yelchin) and a young wheelchair user (Olivia Thirlby) that hits the spot.
