Overview:
Based loosely on philosopher Alain de Botton's novel Essays in Love, this ragged, low-budget romantic comedy is essentially one long flashback during the suicidal last moments of romantic failure Duncan (Brendan Patricks). By glancing back into Duncan's past love life, director Julian Kemp treads similar ground to ((500) Days of Summer, but does so in a contrived visual style coupled with an overlong narrative and extremely low production values. The attempts at being witty end up being more gimmick than skill, and produce stereotypical characters depicted by average performances. Actors such as Naomie Harris and Jane March aren't given the material or direction with which to shine, while leading man Patricks strains under the weight of the whole storyline. Only a surprising cameo by Michael Sheen as an American detective briefly brightens an otherwise below-average offering.
