Overview:
This 1981 slasher horror was one of a slew of derivative movies (Friday the 13th, Prom Night, The Burning) that followed in the wake of John Carpenter's Halloween. Set in a small mining town during a Valentine's Day celebration, the film follows the tried-and-tested formula of horny, partying teenagers being stalked like lambs to the slaughter by a hack-happy boogeyman (in this case, a mad pickaxe-wielding miner). There's the odd creepy moment, particularly when the death-dealing moves to a genuine mine. But the bland characters and sub-par scares and gore (the movie was reputedly slashed by censors in the US and the version available in the UK seems shorn of full-on bloodletting) just go to show how good Carpenter's 1978 classic really is.
