"EVERY WOMAN MUST MAKE A FOOL OF HERSELF OVER A MAN...ONCE!"
- Director: Michael Curtiz
- Genre: Crime, Drama, Romance
- Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
- Black & White | Duration: 120 Mins
|
Overview:
No, not Elvis Presley in the remake, but Wayne Morris as the chivalrous hotel porter in Warner Bros's fast-paced boxing saga, impeccably directed by Casablanca's Michael Curtiz, and unforgettably teaming Edward G Robinson, Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis. It's the mink-clad Davis, called "Fluff" in this Seton Miller adaptation of Francis Wallace's story, who starts the action rolling, revealing sharp insights into prizefight manners and morals. Editor George Amy does a superb job in the cutting room, keeping the film on the move, and Humphrey Bogart, as Eddie G's rival fight promoter Turkey Morgan, has seldom been meaner. Terrific stuff, cleverly handled and supremely entertaining. Morris would make two more "Kid" movies before fading out in B-movie obscurity, but for Davis and Bogart true stardom was just around the corner. And, by the way, Bette gets to sing in this one. Warner Bros - never a studio to waste a good story - remade this in 1941 as The Wagons Roll at Night, also with Bogart.
