Intended as a rehash of Ninotchka, this rubbishy airborne yarn has John Wayne as a US airman and Janet Leigh as a Russian pilot who wants to defect. The resulting mess of crass anti-communist propaganda and cringe-inducing romance was the work of producer Howard Hughes, who owned RKO and had a fetish about planes and breasts. (After Leigh finds out that Wayne's dad was a bird-stuffer, he gazes at her chest and says: "You're pretty well stuffed yourself.") The film took 17 months to shoot and was completed around 1950; Hughes then recut, delaying its release. Worth seeing as a curiosity.

John Wayne stars as U.S. Air Force aviator Jim Shannon, who's tasked with escorting a Soviet pilot (Janet Leigh) claiming -- at the height of the Cold War -- that she wants to defect. After falling in love with and wedding the fetching flyer, Shannon learns from his superiors that she's a spy on a mission to extract military secrets. To save his new wife from prison and deportation, Shannon devises a risky plan in this 1957 drama.
