A miscast Paul Nicholls and Jennifer Love Hewitt play tragic lovers in this flat and unconvincing fantasy drama about appreciating what you've got. Demonstrating zero chemistry together, they fail to add interest to their flimsy characters, as Nicholls's work-obsessed Londoner is given an opportunity to alter destiny by reliving the day his American girlfriend Hewitt was involved in a fatal accident. Consequently, though the Groundhog Day-meets-Sliding Doors-style plotline is meant to be heart-tuggingly romantic, the actual lack of warmth and sincerity makes it difficult to care about the pair or their predictable fates. Even the manipulative third act, with its deluge of slushy dialogue and music, lacks genuine emotion, diluting the impact of the unnecessarily downbeat climax.
