In this hilarious comedy of errors, French army officer Cary Grant marries American WAC Ann Sheridan and attempts to get to the States using the "war bride" bill. Director Howard Hawks wrings every ounce of humour from this bizarre situation, making splendid use of European locations (with interiors filmed at Shepperton Studios), and his cast could scarcely be improved upon. This is one of Grant's cleverest, most subtle performances, but the breezy Sheridan is more than a match for him: just watch that timing in the "sleeplessness in the guest house" sequence, and the increasing sense of frustration as an uncredited Lionel Murton tells Grant again and again, "you can't sleep here" (the film's British release title).
